Deeptech companies in Tartu can apply for up to €120,000 in development support

Sparkup Tartu Science Park opened applications in April for its first deeptech accelerator, where science- and technology-based startups can apply until May 11. The program offers up to €120,000 in business development funding as well as mentorship to help bring scientific ideas from the lab to market-ready products. The accelerator will also run in parallel in Tallinn at Tehnopol.

The accelerator is aimed at teams developing solutions based on science or new technology who want to build a scalable company. Over the course of the 1.5-year program, startups are supported in developing their product, finding their first customers, and preparing to engage with investors. Participants also receive training, mentorship, and access to business networks.

As part of the accelerator, Sparkup Tartu Science Park will host an online event on April 8, where scientific teams are looking for business-minded co-founders. At the event, researchers will present ideas with business potential, and participants will have the opportunity to express interest in joining the teams that resonate with them most.

The deeptech accelerator helps scientific ideas cross the so-called valley of death, said Pille-Riin Meerits, Head of Incubation Services at Sparkup Tartu Science Park. According to her, the program provides scientists and teams with a clear structure for moving from an idea to a functioning business model. In addition to knowledge and connections, participants gain practical understanding of how to validate, develop, and clearly present their technology to investors. This significantly reduces risk and accelerates time to market.

To succeed globally and create lasting impact, key ecosystem partners must contribute their knowledge and resources to support the development of Estonian deeptech startups, said Anu Puusaag, Head of Deeptech at Tehnopol. In addition to the standard elements of an accelerator such as knowledge and networks, the deeptech network helps companies find suitable funding opportunities, investors, and key contacts both in science and business, in Estonia and internationally. The goal is to help scientific discoveries reach the market and real-world application faster.

Supporting the development of deeptech companies is strategically important for Estonia, according to Liisi Kirch, Head of Startup Development at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications. Supporting deeptech companies allows Estonia to bring university-developed technologies to people, attract top international talent, and create high-paying jobs. This strengthens the competitiveness of the Estonian economy and builds a strong bridge between academic research and entrepreneurship.

Applications for the deeptech accelerator are open until May 11. The kick-off event for selected companies will take place on June 4, and the program will begin on August 1.
